Kim Gordon

Kim Gordon, an American artist born in 1953, has distinguished herself since her early days with a hybrid practice that combines contemporary art, experimental music and performance. Trained in visual arts in Los Angeles before co-founding Sonic Youth in New York, she developed a conceptual approach to creation, nourished by the art scene of the 1970s and the influence of figures such as Mike Kelley and Dan Graham. Her visual work—installations, videos, paintings—dialogues with her musical approach to noise, gesture, and dissonance. A feminist icon and major figure in indie culture, Gordon has influenced generations of musicians and visual artists with her rejection of categories and her aesthetic freedom. Still very active, she continues to inspire the young experimental scene, which sees her as a model of integrity, cross-disciplinary discipline and creative audacity.
