Ann Van Den Broek puts dance at the service of emotion. Following on from her piece The Balancing Act, discover the choreographer's work through two installations and a documentary.
Loops of emotion
Installation
Loops of Emotions is a video installation of seven monitors set up in a space. The set-up is adapted to the location and therefore differs each time. Each monitor shows a dancer translating emotional experiences into movements and expressions. Are you overwhelmed by the movements on the seven monitors or do you focus on one dancer at the time? And how do you relate to the expressed emotions?
Installation
To frame her thinking on the theme of balance, Ann Van den Broek drew her ideas for The Balancing Act on long rolls of brown paper. From the structures of her emotions to the structures of her choreographic work, everything was drawn in black marker. The documents became reference material that was under constant construction during rehearsals, with the sheets spread out on the stage or taped to the wall. Initially notes of intent, these scores eventually became the blueprint for the performance.
Film
From the first rehearsals to the residency at Le Lieu Unique in 2023 and to the premiere at Theater Rotterdam; filmmaker Guido Verelst followed Ann Van den Broek and the WArd/waRD crew during the full creation of The Balancing Act. He interviewed the artistic crew and made shots behind the scenes. It resulted in this documentary exposing the artistic process and the way of working from the choreographer. A unique insight!
Film
Memory Loss Inside is a cinematic translation of the successful performance Memory Loss. It is not a registration, it sketches a new perspective on the third creation from The Memory Loss Collection, the triptych on the theme of dementia.
