In 1945, Egyptian peasants unearthed ancient religious manuscripts revealing an unknown aspect of primitive Christianity. These gospels form the basis of the Drone Mass project, commissioned in 2015 by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble from the late Icelandic musician Jóhann Jóhannsson. Described by Jóhannsson as a “contemporary oratorio”, Drone Mass, performed by the Macadam Ensemble, brings together eight singers, a string quartet, and electronic sounds.
