Retour à Reims, from Didier Eribon

The German stage director has adapted the 2009 book Retour à Reims by French sociologist Didier Eribon. On stage, three characters come together to make a documentary: a cinematic translation of the book, where the author returns to Reims after his father’s death to visit his mother, thus revisiting the social milieu he rejected more than thirty years earlier. By juxtaposing the recent history of European politics (the presence of the yellow vests can be felt in the background) the play questions the decline of the left among working class ranks and the rise of populism – but also the possibility of producing political works today.
