Kaori Ito

Chers ("Dear Ones")

For almost twenty years now, Kaori Ito has been developing a hybrid form of movement mixing her Japanese heritage with Western contemporary dance via intimate pieces that dialogue with the invisible. With Chers, she summons ghosts in order to speak about the loss of a loved one. For this conversation with death – which echoes the tradition of Noh theatre – she invites the six performers to write letters to friends and family who have passed away. Using these stories, the dancers move like spirits that oscillate between the realms of the living and the dead.
